The enzyme binds sodium ions (1) und is phosphorylated by ATP (2).
The induced conformational change transports sodium ions to the outer
cell
site (3) and opens the binding sites for potassium ions (4). A
dephosphorylation
starts another conformational change (5) responsible for the transport
of potassium (6) and the beginning of a new cycle.
